Series Resistor Calculation
In a series circuit, the total resistance is the sum of all individual resistances:
Rtotal = R1 + R2 + R3 + ...
Example with three resistors (10Ω, 20Ω, 30Ω) in series:
Rtotal = 10Ω + 20Ω + 30Ω = 60Ω
Parallel Resistor Calculation
In a parallel circuit, total resistance is calculated using reciprocal formula:
1/Rtotal = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3 + ...
Example with three resistors (10Ω, 20Ω, 30Ω) in parallel:
1/Rtotal = 1/10 + 1/20 + 1/30 = 0.1 + 0.05 + 0.033 ≈ 0.183
Rtotal ≈ 1/0.183 ≈ 5.46Ω
Key Differences
Series: Rtotal > All individual resistors
Parallel: Rtotal < Smallest individual resistor
Parallel: Rtotal < Smallest individual resistor
